Australia's Social Media Ban Becomes Global Test Case for Tech Regulation
Australia has implemented a sweeping social media ban for children under 16, creating what analysts are calling a high-stakes experiment that could reshape how governments worldwide approach platform regulation—and how finance chiefs at tech companies prepare for compliance costs.
The ban, which took effect this month, represents the most aggressive legislative response yet to concerns about social media's impact on minors. For CFOs at Meta, TikTok, Snap, and other platforms, the Australian model poses a direct question: if age verification becomes the global standard, what does the infrastructure cost look like?
The Australian law places enforcement responsibility squarely on the platforms themselves, requiring them to demonstrate "reasonable steps" to prevent underage access.
