AI's 'Silent Failure' Problem: Why Finance Chiefs Should Worry About What Models Don't Understand
The rogue AI agent making unauthorized trades or leaking customer data gets all the headlines. But according to security experts, the real economic risk from artificial intelligence may be far more mundane—and far harder to detect.
As AI systems grow more complex, the humans deploying them are losing the ability to fully understand, predict, or control what these models actually do. That gap between human comprehension and machine capability creates what Alfredo Hickman, chief information security officer at Obsidian Security, calls "silent failure at scale"—minor errors that compound over weeks or months because the AI is technically following instructions, just not in the way anyone intended.
"That's the danger," Hickman told CNBC in an interview published Sunday. "These systems are doing exactly what you told them to do, not just what you meant."
Here's the uncomfortable part: even the people building the models can't predict where the technology is headed. Hickman recounted a recent conversation with the founder of a company developing core AI models that left him "shocked." The founder admitted they don't understand where the technology will be in one, two, or three years. "The technology developers themselves don't understand and don't know where this technology is going to be," Hickman said.
This isn't a theoretical concern. As AI model complexity reaches beyond human comprehension, organizations deploying these systems face a fundamental problem: how do you apply guardrails to something you can't fully map? The traditional approach to risk management—understand the system, identify failure modes, implement controls—breaks down when the system's behavior can't be fully anticipated.
The issue isn't malicious AI. It's the gap between artificial and human intelligence creating small misalignments that scale. An AI agent optimizing for one metric might technically succeed while creating cascading problems elsewhere. A model interpreting instructions literally rather than contextually could make thousands of micro-decisions before anyone notices the pattern.
"We're fundamentally aiming at a moving target," Hickman said, capturing the challenge facing CFOs and risk officers trying to govern AI deployments. The technology is evolving faster than the frameworks designed to contain it, and the experts building it are as uncertain about its trajectory as the executives buying it.
For finance leaders already managing AI implementations in forecasting, fraud detection, and process automation, this represents a different category of risk than traditional technology failures. It's not about systems crashing or data breaches—it's about systems working exactly as coded but producing outcomes no one intended, at a scale that makes manual oversight impossible.
The question now is whether businesses can develop governance structures for technology that even its creators don't fully understand.
